Water-based adhesives are made from a combination of water, polymers, and additives, curing as the water evaporates. Water-based adhesives are ideal for use on both foam and non-foam surfaces, environmentally friendly, and safe for the working environment.

Before delving into the details of water-based adhesives, it is important to first understand the concept of adhesive bonding.

What is adhesive? Adhesive is a mixture, typically in liquid or semi-liquid form, used to bond two surfaces together. Most adhesives are derived from polymers, which can be sourced from either natural or synthetic materials. Depending on the application and field of use, adhesives can be formulated with specific adjustments.

Simalfa’s water-based adhesive line has developed over 150 different adhesive formulas, meeting specialized requirements and applications.

Types of Water-Based Adhesives

Latex Adhesive

Latex adhesive, a branch of water-based adhesives, is made from emulsified elastomers (rubbers).

Similar to polymer adhesives, latex adhesive needs to be applied to the material surface and allowed to dry naturally, forming a strong or flexible bond depending on the formulation.

Latex adhesives are commonly used for bonding stamps, envelopes, fabrics, leather, and wood.

Resin/Polymer Adhesive

The main components of water-based resin adhesives are vinyl acetate, ethylene vinyl acetate, and emulsified acrylic polymer resins.

These emulsions are combinations of liquids that cannot completely blend together.

In resin adhesives, water is mixed with polyvinyl acetate (PVA) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) to create a bright white mixture. When the adhesive dries, it forms a transparent, flexible bond, making it suitable for applications on paper, wood, and plastic.

Casein Adhesive

Animal adhesives or protein adhesives are extracted from animal parts (commonly used for hot glue) or from proteins found in animal milk (to produce casein glue).

Hot animal adhesives are typically used for applications requiring fast setting, while casein glue – due to its better resistance to water and moisture – is widely used in the bottling industry for beer and wine.

Dextrin Adhesive

Plant-based adhesives are one of the most common types of water-based adhesives. They are primarily made from starch, creating a relatively weak bond.

As a result, they are often used in the paper industry, such as for bookbinding.

Although they adhere well to paper, plant-based dextrin adhesives are prone to breaking down when exposed to water due to their plant origin.

Products

Simalfa adhesives specialize in water-based products, including latex adhesives, resin adhesives, and polymer adhesives.

These water-based adhesive lines are designed to deliver top performance in the industry, are environmentally friendly, and are completely solvent-free.
